I am very careful about listening to music by Nick Drake and Elliot Smith. The self-destruction that claimed them has seeds in me too, and I don't want to coax that growth toward the surface if I can avoid it.

That said, tonight I listened to Elliot. Good-by, man. I'm sorry you couldn't stay.
