Hit and run

I'm finding more and more than the really critical events in a person's life are the ones that come without warning, that don't give one the time to plan and prepare--from the drunk driving fatality to the unexpected job offer. I've been lucky to have had as many good such events as bad ones, but the one thing they've all had in common is the power to throw me from the path I'd expected to be on for an indefinite time. Some of these events offer choices; some set one on a diverted route that can't be undone. Either way, these are the circumstances that show us who we really are and what we really believe and cherish, that test our creativity and drive, that challenge us in ways we may or may not be able to meet, at that time or later.

And one certainty of life is that these events will keep coming. There is no such thing as setting one's course and being able to never deviate from it, at least not in the life of anyone that I've ever known. This is both curse and blessing, robbery and gift. This is what makes up life.
