Hm, a quick check at www.spaceweather.com shows that, while we haven't had any major solar flares lately, today's Sunspot Number is 198 -- a pretty high number, considering that the chart they show of "yearly averaged sunspot numbers 1610-2000" tops out at 200, so today's sunspot number is equal to the highest recorded yearly average. So maybe there *is* something to this sunspot idea after all. They do also warn that "solar wind gusts from a small coronal hole could excite (probably minor) geomagnetic activity later today", so that might be a contributing factor. (Hm, I wonder what the chances are for good aurora viewing?... probably no chance in the city, actually. Oh well.)
