So far today, LJ, Hotmail, Windows, and Word have had "issues." For my part, I somehow corrupted a Word file so badly that it locks up the whole program, but I don't know what I did or see any evidence of anything.

I believe it is Mercury retrograde right now. Things like this are supposed to happen during Mercury retrograde. At least it's better to believe that than to worry about giant sunspot flare-ups (although that is my favorite explanation for machinery that goes awry) or magnetic smart bombs detonating in space.

Hm, a quick check at www.spaceweather.com shows that, while we haven't had any major solar flares lately, today's Sunspot Number is 198 -- a pretty high number, considering that the chart they show of "yearly averaged sunspot numbers 1610-2000" tops out at 200, so today's sunspot number is equal to the highest recorded yearly average. So maybe there *is* something to this sunspot idea after all. They do also warn that "solar wind gusts from a small coronal hole could excite (probably minor) geomagnetic activity later today", so that might be a contributing factor. (Hm, I wonder what the chances are for good aurora viewing?... probably no chance in the city, actually. Oh well.)

Yes, I wear my Nerd badge with pride. :)

What was that?

Ooh...do provide details!

(That makes another vote for Mercury retrograde, afaic.)

Microsoft purchased some additional bandwidth from AT&T... While setting it up AT&T screwed up the routing tables knocking out MSN, Hotmail and Microsoft for an hour or so yesterday about noon.

And LJ's problems were strictly due to their own database issues, I think. Well, the sunspot theory sounded good, anyhow. ;)

Maybe sunspots made Microsoft buy bandwidth from AT&T? (This would been a past sunspot storm, of course.)
