Starbucks is buying SBC and Torrefazione.

So this gives me 90 days to stockpile my Torrefazione Palermo Blend before I'm supporting Starbucks if I buy it. Pbbbbbt.

Exactly the reason why I will continue to support Tully's and the smaller coffee places with my dollar.

Starbucks can bite me :P

Ugh. I heard SBC, but didn't hear Torrefazione. Thanks for the heads up - guess I'll be doing the same.

I don't support Tully's, specifically, because of their political contributions, but I'm really miffed about SBC, since that's been a Vashon employer and landmark for years now.

Guess maybe I'll have to stick to drinking the Monks' coffee

Good thing it's wonderful stuff :-)

And weren't they the ones that won the legal battle with Starbucks about calling one of their varieties "Christmas Blend"? Heh heh.

Good French roast, too.

Well, it's not like supporting AFC Enterprises was that much better (most of those big congloms are pretty much the same); but it is certainly disappointing. Aside from losing the Vashon offices (dunno how likely that is yet); it means that it just got that much harder to find good, unburnt coffee.

This was the first I'd heard about Torrefazione being owned by a big corp, which would have been disappointing enough.

If I ever have the time and patience, I should compile a list of non-corporate coffee companies and post it here.

Torrefazione was bought by SBC many years ago. I hadn't specifically known that SBC was owned by a bigger conglomerate, but that's not surprising to me at all.

I'm mostly just worried that Starbucks will now kill off the "competing" brands, or else slowly change them to be more and more like Starbucks. The main reason I don't buy Starbucks isn't their questionable politics (though that does bother me), it's because their coffee tastes like crap. Now they're likely to reduce the biggest good brand of coffee (Torre, that is, SBC also tastes pretty bad) to the same crappy level. It also makes it trickier supporting independent coffee shops, because so many of those get their beans from (what will now all be) Starbucks.

This sucks big hairy ass. I love Torrefazione (hell, I love just *saying* "Torrefazione," with faux-Italian hand gestures, of course) and SBC wasn't bad either... and since I don't like Tully's, I guess I'll be spending my coffee allowance at Bauhaus, until those Starbucks bastards decide to buy up Cafe Trieste as well...

Sheesh, pretty soon it will impossible to get a decent latte in Seattle... who'da guessed. Sad.
